The study of chakras will teach the seven principal chakras which are said to reflect how the unified consciousness of humanity is divided to manage different aspects of earthly life.
The top of your head (or crown) being concerned with pure consciousness and the bottom ( or root ) being concerned with matter.
Starting from the base of the spine upwards the study of chakras listed below discuss each chakra point with some of their associated physiological functions, color and other distinguishing characteristics.
Root Chakra– The root is located at the base of the spine. This is associated with the color red and the word earth, as it is thought that it grounds us to our physical world and creates stability. This is also associated with security and survival. This would be the chakra that alerts the body with the fight or flight response that we relate with our reactions to stress.
Spleen Chakra– The spleen chakra point is located in the lower abdomen and associated with the color orange. This is also related with the word water which is fluid and readily changing. The primary functions being creativity and sexual energy.
Solar Plexis– The solar plexis chakra is located at the mouth of the stomach and is associated with the color yellow and the word fire which depicts a strong mix of will and intensity of spirit, feeling , and passion. This also has an influence over the emotions of joy and anger and said to be of energy since it is correlated with the digestive system that converts the food that we eat to energy for the body.
Heart– The heart chakra is located in the center of the chest and is associated with the color green and the word air which depicts the open space around and above the earth. The primary functions are love, wisdom, equilibrium and compassion. This chakra is also related to the thymus organ in the body which is unfavorably affected by stress.
Throat– The throat chakra is located in the body at the base of the throat and is associated with the color blue and the components of life and sound. This represents growth, expression and communication which is beneficial to balance with song, humming or conscious breathing.
Third Eye- The third eye chakra is located in the body on the forehead centered between the eyebrows and is associated with the color indigo and the components of time and light. This represents intuition, imagination, psychic abilities, and visualization.
Crown- The crown chakra is located in the body on the top of the head and is associated with the color violet and the components of space and thought. This is said to be the highest point, the point of enlightenment. Associated with the higher realms, spiritual connection and union with God.
The study of chakras will aid you when you feel out of balance to be able to recognize where your problem may lie. While practicing yoga and working with each chakra your goal is to produce balance and bring harmony to your inner being. Imbalances may show outwardly indicating to you a need to focus and bring back into balance a particular chakra. If you are experiencing heart problems then your focus should be on your heart chakra, anger – your solar plexis, emotional problems on your spleen communication issues on your throat and so on.
