Spinal Decompression

Cox Spinal Decompression Therapy
By John R. Istad, DC

Back and neck pain can be caused by a number of conditions such as:

  • √ Spinal stenosis
  • √ Disc herniations
  • √ Ruptured disc or bulging disc
  • √ Degenerative disc disease
  • √ Chronic strain/sprains

These conditions may lead to neck and low back pain, arm or leg pain and headaches. As a Certified Cox Decompression Practitioner I see these conditions every day.

Dr. James Cox developed this technique throughout his 40 years of research. It was his research in 2 federally funded studies that lead to the FDA approval of non-surgical treatment of these conditions.

Dr Cox’s research found that by decompressing the spinal disc actually reduces the size of the disc herniation and increases the thickness of the disc. The research indicates that 86% of all patients’ achieve a positive result. This procedure is controlled by the physician at all times.

Treatment Goal

Our goal is for the patient to reduce 50% of the pain within 30 days. If not, further diagnostic studies are ordered or a surgical consult is made.

Most patients experience relief within the first few visits. In the case of ridiculer pain, such as arm or leg pain, there is a reduction of pain usually by the second week of treatments.
Other tools that are used to treat the patient’s condition include physical therapy in the form of electrical stimulation, ultrasound, cold laser therapy and acupuncture. The purpose of these therapies is to reduce muscle spasms, increase blood flow to the region and reduce pain.

Nutritional supplementation is also important and should include glucosamine sulfate, chondroitin sulfate and herbals such as turmeric, boswellia and devils claw to help rebuild the disc and reduce pain and inflammation.
